Islandmoss or rendeermoss is an colloquial term. The scientific name of the moss we use is Cladonia stellaris, a fruticose lichen. More information and pictures see Wikipedia.

 

 

We offer Islandmoss in three qualities:

 

Mossitive Islandmoss is a lichen, which grows in summer green forests but mostly within boreal and arctic regions around the circumpolar north. It forms hugh mats on the surface of bare soil or gravel on acid soil. Main appearance is in light habitats like light forests or nutrient-deficient undergrounds. We receive our mossitive moss from the European Polar circle. Similar to the wood, which is obtained from the living tree, it behaves also with the moss. The moss we use has all the qualities of living moss, but it does not live and grow anymore.

 

Mossitive colours the Iceland moss with a saline, colored water solution containing natural salt from the Dead Sea. The composition of salt is of 50.8% magnesium chloride, 14.4% calcium chloride, 30.4% sodium chloride and 4.4% potassium chloride, based on the anhydrous salts. For the sake of the environment and for the sake of our health, we abstain from using heavy metals and glycerine.

 

 

Even after many years, mossitive Iceland mosses still have a high color consistency and thus an exclusive natural look. In addition, with our dyeing process, the microstructures with the natural function of moss to absorb and release water from the air moisture are permanently preserved. In addition, the moss is protected by this conservation against environmental influences such as mold and pests.

 

 

Basically mossitive moss pictures can be used indoors at any location, either vertically on walls or horizontally on the floor or even under the ceiling. Only those with direct and long solar radiation and locations in the immediate vicinity of radiators should be avoided.

 

Mossitive Iceland mosses have been shown to have a positive effect on particulate matter in the air. The microstructures of the moss bind particulate matter from the air by means of electrostatic attraction (the moss microstructures form a huge surface that is electrically negatively charged. Fine dust is usually electrically positively charged. As a result, the fine dust is attracted and bound). Mossitive Iceland moss has the property of a sponge and therefore a regulating effect on the humidity. Due to the large surface, moss can very quickly bind or release large quantities of water. In wetrooms it can e.g. Take the shower mist before it is reflected on cold wall areas and may. cause a long-term mold growth. At a humidity of more than 40%, the moss binds the humidity and becomes soft. At low humidity, the moss releases the stored moisture into the room air, dries out and becomes hard. Both states are natural states of the moss. Regardless of the condition, the appearance of the moss is consistent. Hard, dry moss immediately softens as humidity increases. Thus, the moss object is not only a design object but also a natural room air indicator, which indicates that the room humidity is too low (in living rooms, the relative humidity should be between 40 and 60%).

 

Island mosses have an extremely positive effect on room acoustics. The microstructures of the moss absorb the sound and thus reduce the sound reflections in the entire room. In addition, carrier materials such as cork, felt or polystyrene have a sound-absorbing effect. Moss pictures and vertical gardens are therefore ideally suited as acoustic pictures or acoustic wall.

moss-like Iceland mosses are not a growth environment for microbes or microorganisms of any kind.

 

 

Basically the moss itself does not emit any pollutants. In addition, we work with a water-soluble, pollutant-free adhesive, so that even finished moss pictures do not emit any harmful emissions.

 

 

Iceland moss requires practically no maintenance. Dust formation on the moss, can be easily removed using a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment, at low suction power. Other measures such as watering, fertilizing, pruning or exposure to natural light are not necessary, as the Iceland moss in this state no longer has an enzymatic reaction.

 

 

In case of fire, reindeer moss behaves like materials of fire protection class B1. After removing the fire source, the fire extinguishes automatically.

 

 

Icelandic mosses generally come from the European Arctic Circle. Only moss fields outside the reindeer's winter food areas are harvested. In addition, the moss harvest is carried out according to traditional techniques that guarantee rapid regrowth. We do not offer other mosses such as Bollmoos / Polstermoos out of love for the environment.

 

 

Basically Islandmoos is more suitable for indoor use. In its natural state, Iceland moss only becomes soft at very high humidity levels of approx. 98%. If the humidity is below this level, Iceland moss is hard and brittle. In order to keep the Iceland moss soft indoors even at normal humidity of 40%-60%, the mosses are treated with natural salt. Only in the soft state the mosses have the effect of fine dust absorption and the storage capacity of humidity. If such treated Iceland moss were used outdoors, the salt would gradually be washed out by the rain. This makes Icelandic moss brittle and hard again at normal humidity and therefore easily breaks.

 

 

 

Iceland moss is practically durable. We have been using moss pictures for over 10 years without any significant changes.
